What Does Procalcitonin Mean on a Blood Test?

Procalcitonin · say it: proh-kal-sih-TOH-ninAlso written: PCT, pro-calcitonin

Short answer

Procalcitonin is a blood marker that tends to rise sharply when the body is fighting a bacterial infection.

What it means

Procalcitonin is a protein that is normally present only in tiny amounts. During a bacterial infection, many tissues in the body start releasing it, so the blood level can climb within hours. It is mostly measured in hospital, often in people who are seriously unwell, where a severe infection such as sepsis needs urgent medical care.

Doctors use procalcitonin to help answer two questions: is this illness more likely bacterial or viral, and can antibiotics safely be stopped? A rising result supports a bacterial cause. A falling result over a few days can suggest the infection is coming under control, which helps the team decide when antibiotics are no longer needed. It is always read together with symptoms, examination and other tests, never alone.

Procalcitonin is often printed near CRP, but they behave differently. CRP rises with many kinds of inflammation, while procalcitonin is more closely linked to bacterial infection and tends to stay lower with most viral illnesses.

Where you may see it

  • Emergency department and intensive care blood results
  • Hospital results for suspected pneumonia or sepsis
  • Daily blood tests used to decide how long antibiotics should continue
  • Discharge summaries that mention infection markers

📄 How it looks on a report

Procalcitonin H Bacterial infection likely; consider repeat in 24-48 h to guide antibiotic duration.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • A raised procalcitonin does not tell you which germ is causing the infection or where it is. Cultures and scans are used for that.
  • A low result does not completely rule out a bacterial infection, especially very early on or when the infection is contained in one place.
  • Procalcitonin can rise without infection, for example after major surgery, serious injury, burns or with some kidney problems.
