What Is a Cephalosporin? Penicillin Allergy and Warnings

Cephalosporin · say it: SEF-uh-loh-SPOR-inAlso written: cephalosporins, cephalosporin antibiotic, cefalosporin

Short answer

A cephalosporin is a type of antibiotic related to penicillin, used for many bacterial infections. Names often begin with 'cef' or 'ceph'.

What it means

Cephalosporins are a large family of antibiotics that kill bacteria by damaging their cell wall. They are used for skin, chest, urinary, ear and many other infections. Their names usually start with 'cef' or 'ceph', such as cefalexin (cephalexin), cefuroxime or ceftriaxone. Like other antibiotics, they do not work against viruses such as colds or flu.

Their labels warn about allergic reactions because they are chemically related to penicillins. Most people with a penicillin allergy can take some cephalosporins, but people who have had a severe reaction to penicillin need careful assessment first. Labels also warn about C. diff diarrhea, which can follow almost any antibiotic.

Cephalosporins are grouped into 'generations'. This describes which bacteria they act on best, not which is stronger or better for you.

Where you may see it

  • 'Contraindications' and 'Warnings' sections of cefalexin, cefuroxime and ceftriaxone labels
  • Allergy records and prescription lists
  • Culture and sensitivity reports listing which antibiotics work

📄 How it looks on a report

Before therapy with a cephalosporin is instituted, inquire whether the patient has had previous hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins, penicillins or other drugs.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • A penicillin allergy does not automatically mean you cannot take any cephalosporin, but tell your prescriber.
  • A newer 'generation' is not simply stronger or better.
  • It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.
