What Is Cirrhosis? Why Medicine Labels Mention It
Cirrhosis · say it: sih-ROH-sisAlso written: liver cirrhosis, cirrhosis of the liver, hepatic cirrhosis
Short answer
Cirrhosis is long-term scarring of the liver, where healthy tissue is replaced by scar tissue so the liver cannot work as well.
What it means
Cirrhosis is advanced scarring of the liver. It develops over years when the liver is repeatedly damaged, for example by alcohol, hepatitis B or C, or fat build-up. Scar tissue replaces healthy liver cells and changes blood flow through the liver. Early on there may be no symptoms; later there can be tiredness, jaundice, fluid in the belly or easy bruising. Vomiting blood, black stools or new confusion need emergency help.
Medicine labels mention cirrhosis or 'hepatic impairment' because the liver breaks down many medicines. With cirrhosis, medicines can build up, so doses may need lowering, some medicines should be avoided, and sedatives need extra care. Labels often refer to Child-Pugh class A, B or C, a scoring system doctors use to grade how severe liver disease is.
Fatty liver and hepatitis are earlier forms of liver injury that can lead to cirrhosis but are not the same thing. Fibrosis means scarring that has not reached the cirrhosis stage.
Where you may see it
- 'Use in specific populations: hepatic impairment' sections of labels
- Ultrasound, elastography and CT reports ('cirrhotic liver')
- Hepatology clinic letters
📄 How it looks on a report
Not recommended in patients with moderate or severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh B or C).
🙅 What it does not mean
- Cirrhosis is not caused only by alcohol.
- A 'coarse liver' on an ultrasound does not always mean cirrhosis.
- It does not mean nothing can be done; treating the cause and regular checks can make a real difference.
