What Is Lipodystrophy? Injection Lumps and Fat Changes

Lipodystrophy · say it: lip-oh-DIS-truh-feeAlso written: lipoatrophy, lipohypertrophy, fat redistribution, injection-site lipodystrophy

Short answer

Lipodystrophy means abnormal loss, build-up or redistribution of body fat, either in one area or across the body.

What it means

Lipodystrophy is a general term for changes in where the body stores fat. Fat can be lost (lipoatrophy), build up (lipohypertrophy), or shift from one area to another, for example less fat in the face and limbs and more around the tummy or the back of the neck. It can be inherited, linked to certain conditions, or caused by medicines or repeated injections in the same spot.

Two common places it appears on labels: insulin and other injectable medicine labels warn about lumps or dents in the skin from injecting in the same place, and advise rotating injection sites, because injecting into a lumpy area can also affect how well the medicine is absorbed and change blood sugar control. Some older HIV medicine labels mention fat redistribution, which was seen more with older treatments.

Lipodystrophy is different from ordinary weight gain or loss. Lipohypertrophy at an injection site is a local lump, not a sign of disease elsewhere in the body.

Where you may see it

  • Insulin and injectable medicine labels ('rotate injection sites')
  • Older antiretroviral medicine labels ('fat redistribution')
  • Diabetes clinic and HIV clinic notes

📄 How it looks on a report

Rotate injection sites within the same region to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy and localized cutaneous amyloidosis.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • Lumps at injection sites are not usually dangerous, but they can affect how your insulin works.
  • Lipodystrophy is not the same as normal weight changes.
  • Changes in body shape on modern HIV treatment have many possible causes; talk to your clinic rather than stopping medicine.
