What Does MDE Mean in Medical Notes?
MDE (major depressive episode) · say it: em-dee-EEAlso written: major depressive episode, depressive episode, MDE medical abbreviation
Short answer
In medical notes, MDE usually stands for major depressive episode: a period of at least two weeks of depression symptoms.
What it means
MDE is short for major depressive episode. It describes a stretch of time, at least two weeks, when a person has low mood or has lost interest or pleasure in most things, along with other symptoms such as sleep or appetite changes, tiredness, poor concentration or feelings of worthlessness. If you or someone you care for has thoughts of self-harm, contact emergency services or a crisis line now.
Clinicians write MDE in assessment notes, letters and medicine labels to describe a period of illness, not a whole diagnosis. An episode can be part of major depressive disorder, and it can also happen within bipolar disorder, where periods of depression alternate with high mood. That is why you may see phrases such as "current MDE", "recurrent MDEs" or "MDE in remission".
MDE is different from MDD (major depressive disorder). MDD is the diagnosis; an MDE is one episode. Someone with MDD may have had a single episode or several. In other settings MDE can stand for something else entirely, so if it appears on a non-mental-health document, ask what the writer meant.
Where you may see it
- Psychiatry and GP assessment notes, often with "current" or "recurrent"
- Referral letters to mental health services
- Medicine labels that list the treatment of depressive episodes as a use
- Research and questionnaire summaries that screen for depression
📄 How it looks on a report
Impression: recurrent MDE, moderate, no psychotic features.
🙅 What it does not mean
- An MDE is not ordinary sadness after a bad week; it is a defined pattern that lasts at least two weeks and affects daily life.
- "MDE in remission" does not always mean treatment can stop; it describes how things are now, and plans are made with the care team.
- MDE on its own does not say whether the cause is major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder; the rest of the note does.
