What Is Phenylketonuria (PKU)? Why Labels Warn About It
Phenylketonuria · say it: fen-ul-kee-toh-NYOOR-ee-uhAlso written: PKU, phenylketonurics
Short answer
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited condition in which the body cannot properly break down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in protein and aspartame.
What it means
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare inherited condition. People with PKU cannot properly break down phenylalanine, one of the building blocks of protein. If it builds up, it can harm the brain, so people with PKU follow a special diet. Many countries test newborn babies for PKU with a heel-prick blood test so it can be managed from early life.
Medicine labels say 'Phenylketonurics: contains phenylalanine' when a product contains aspartame, a sweetener that the body turns partly into phenylalanine. It is common on chewable tablets, sugar-free syrups and dissolving tablets. The warning is for people with PKU, who need to count every source; it is not a warning for everyone else.
PKU is a specific diagnosis made by blood tests. It is different from a general sensitivity to sweeteners or a food allergy.
