What Is Retinal Toxicity? Eye Screening on Medicines
Retinal toxicity · say it: RET-in-ul tok-SIS-ih-teeAlso written: retinopathy, drug-induced retinopathy, hydroxychloroquine retinopathy, retinal damage
Short answer
Retinal toxicity is damage to the retina, the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye, caused by a medicine.
What it means
The retina is the thin layer at the back of the eye that senses light and sends signals to the brain. Retinal toxicity means a medicine has harmed it. Early changes may cause no symptoms at all. Later, people may notice trouble reading, missing patches in their vision, blurred central vision, or problems seeing in dim light. Some damage can be permanent, which is why early detection matters.
It is best known on hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine labels, which warn that long-term use can damage the retina, with risk rising with higher doses, longer use and kidney problems. These labels advise a baseline eye examination and regular screening during treatment, often with special scans. Other medicines can also list it. The warning is there so that screening happens before symptoms appear.
Retinal toxicity is different from cataracts (clouding of the lens) and glaucoma (damage to the optic nerve). 'Retinopathy' is the general word for disease of the retina from any cause, such as diabetes.

📄 How it looks on a report
Irreversible retinal damage has been observed in some patients treated with hydroxychloroquine. A baseline ocular examination is recommended.
🙅 What it does not mean
- The warning does not mean eye damage is expected; regular screening is designed to pick up early changes.
- Good vision now does not rule out early changes; that is why screening is done.
- Do not stop the medicine on your own; talk to your doctor if your screening shows changes.
