Biopsy and pathology
What Does Atypical Mean on a Pathology Report?
Atypical · say it: ay-TIP-ih-kulAlso written: atypia, atypical cells
Short answer
Atypical means cells look different from normal under the microscope, but not clearly enough to be called cancer.
What it means
On pathology and cytology reports, atypical means the cells do not look completely normal. They may be a slightly different size or shape, or their centres (nuclei) may look unusual.
Atypical cells can be caused by inflammation, infection, healing or irritation. Sometimes atypia is a change that could, over time, lead toward cancer in some tissues, which is why doctors may recommend follow-up or more testing.
The word sits in a middle zone: not clearly normal and not cancer. What it means depends a lot on the organ and the exact wording used.
