What Does Necrosis Mean on a Report or Medicine Label?
Necrosis · say it: neh-KROH-sisAlso written: tissue death, necrotic, cell death
Short answer
Necrosis means death of body tissue or cells in a particular area, caused by injury, infection, lack of blood supply or certain substances.
What it means
Necrosis is the death of cells or tissue in one area of the body. It can happen when blood supply is cut off, after injury, infection, burns, or from toxic substances. The dead tissue cannot recover, and the body or a doctor may need to remove it. When skin is affected it may turn dark, black or blistered, and spreading redness, severe pain or fever needs urgent care.
Medicine labels mention necrosis in several ways: skin and tissue necrosis if certain injections leak out of a vein, warfarin-related skin necrosis (rare), osteonecrosis of the jaw with bisphosphonates and some other medicines, and necrotizing fasciitis with some diabetes medicines. Pathology and scan reports may also describe 'necrosis' inside a tumour or tissue.
Necrosis on a pathology report describes what is seen, not a diagnosis by itself. Apoptosis is a different, normal, planned kind of cell death.
Where you may see it
- 'Warnings' on injectable medicine labels about leakage (extravasation)
- Bisphosphonate leaflets on osteonecrosis of the jaw
- Pathology and imaging reports ('central necrosis')
📄 How it looks on a report
Necrosis: no tumour necrosis identified.
🙅 What it does not mean
- Necrosis on a report does not by itself mean cancer.
- A label warning about necrosis does not mean it is likely.
- Not every dark patch of skin is necrosis, but sudden changes should be checked.
