What Is a Blood Schizontocide? Antimalarials Explained
Blood Schizontocide · say it: blud SKIZ-on-toh-sydeAlso written: blood schizonticide, blood-stage antimalarial, schizontocidal
Short answer
A blood schizontocide is an antimalarial that kills the malaria parasites in the blood stage, which is the stage that causes symptoms.
What it means
Malaria parasites go through different stages in the body: first in the liver, then in the red blood cells. In the blood, they multiply into forms called schizonts, which burst the red cells and cause the fever and illness. A blood schizontocide is a medicine that kills the parasite at this blood stage. Many common antimalarials, such as chloroquine, artemisinin-based medicines and mefloquine, act this way.
Labels use the term to explain what a medicine does and does not do. A blood schizontocide treats the illness, but it may not reach dormant liver forms of P. vivax or P. ovale. That is why some people need an extra medicine afterwards to prevent relapses, and why some labels say to continue preventive tablets for a period after leaving a malaria area.
A tissue schizontocide acts on the liver stage instead. Doctors choose combinations based on the species and where the infection was caught.

📄 How it looks on a report
This drug is a blood schizontocide. It is not active against the exoerythrocytic (liver) stages of the parasite.
🙅 What it does not mean
- It does not mean the medicine is weak; blood-stage action is what treats the symptoms.
- It does not always clear every stage of every malaria species.
- Feeling better does not mean preventive tablets can be stopped early.
