What Is Plasmodium Falciparum? Severe Malaria Explained

Plasmodium Falciparum · say it: plaz-MOH-dee-um fal-SIP-uh-rumAlso written: P. falciparum, falciparum malaria, malignant tertian malaria

Short answer

Plasmodium falciparum is the malaria parasite species most likely to cause severe, life-threatening malaria; suspected cases need urgent care.

What it means

Plasmodium falciparum is one of several parasite species that cause malaria in humans. It is the species most likely to cause severe malaria, which can affect the brain, kidneys and blood and can become life-threatening quickly. Anyone with fever after being in a falciparum area needs urgent medical testing.

It appears on antimalarial labels because medicines are tested and approved against particular species. Labels may say a medicine treats 'uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria' or warn that falciparum in many regions is resistant to older medicines such as chloroquine. This helps doctors choose a medicine that will work for the place you travelled.

Other species, such as P. vivax and P. ovale, can hide in the liver and cause relapses later, which needs a different added treatment. P. falciparum does not form these dormant liver stages.

Where you may see it

  • Antimalarial labels under 'Indications' and 'Microbiology'
  • Malaria blood film or rapid test results
  • Travel clinic letters

📄 How it looks on a report

Blood film: Plasmodium falciparum seen. Parasitemia 1%.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • A positive result is not something to wait on; falciparum malaria needs prompt treatment.
  • A low parasite count does not mean the infection is mild; doctors look at symptoms too.
  • It is not spread by casual contact between people.
