What Does Calcium Level Mean on a Blood Test?
Calcium level · say it: KAL-see-um LEV-ulAlso written: Ca, serum calcium, total calcium, adjusted calcium, corrected calcium
Short answer
Your calcium level shows how much calcium is in your blood, which the body uses for bones, nerves, muscles and heartbeat.
What it means
Calcium is the most plentiful mineral in the body. Almost all of it is stored in bones and teeth. The small amount in the blood is needed for muscles to contract, nerves to send signals, the heart to beat and blood to clot. Parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, the kidneys and the gut work together to keep it steady.
Calcium is on the comprehensive metabolic panel and on bone profiles. About half of blood calcium is attached to albumin, so when albumin is low, total calcium can look low even if the active part is fine. That is why many reports print an "adjusted" or "corrected" calcium, and some labs measure ionized calcium, the free and active part, directly. A high level is called hypercalcemia; a low level is called hypocalcemia.
Blood calcium does not show how strong your bones are. Bone density is checked with a special X-ray scan (DEXA), and blood calcium can sit inside the range even when bones are thin.
Where you may see it
- Comprehensive metabolic panels and bone profiles
- Reports printing "Adjusted calcium" next to albumin
- Results from parathyroid or kidney clinics
📄 How it looks on a report
Calcium (adjusted) 2.71 mmol/L H
🙅 What it does not mean
- A high blood calcium does not come from drinking milk or eating cheese. Hormones control the level, and diet alone seldom pushes it out of range.
- A low total calcium does not always mean you are short of calcium. It may reflect low albumin, which is why the adjusted value matters.
- A blood calcium result is not a test for osteoporosis and says little about bone strength.
