What Is Hypocalcemia? Low Calcium on Labels and Reports
Hypocalcemia · say it: hy-poh-kal-SEE-mee-uhAlso written: hypocalcaemia, low calcium, low blood calcium
Short answer
Hypocalcemia means the level of calcium in the blood is lower than the reference range printed on the report.
What it means
Hypocalcemia means low calcium in the blood. Calcium is needed for strong bones, and also for muscles, nerves and the heart to work properly. Mild low calcium may cause no symptoms, while lower levels can cause tingling around the mouth or in the fingers, muscle cramps or spasms. Severe low calcium can affect the heart rhythm and needs urgent medical care.
Labels mention hypocalcemia because some medicines, such as bisphosphonates and other bone medicines, can lower calcium, especially in people who already have low calcium or low vitamin D. The label often says to correct low calcium before starting and to make sure calcium and vitamin D intake are adequate.
Hypocalcemia is the opposite of hypercalcemia (high calcium). Blood calcium results are sometimes 'corrected' for the level of a protein called albumin, so your report may show both values.
Where you may see it
- Bisphosphonate and other bone medicine labels under 'Warnings and Precautions'
- Blood test reports (calcium, corrected calcium)
- Kidney and thyroid surgery follow-up letters
📄 How it looks on a report
Hypocalcemia must be corrected before initiating therapy.
🙅 What it does not mean
- A slightly low calcium result is not always caused by diet; vitamin D, kidney function, parathyroid glands and medicines all play a part.
- It is not the same as osteoporosis, though both involve calcium.
- A label warning does not mean you will develop low calcium; it means calcium should be checked.
