What Does 'Protect From Excessive Moisture' Mean?

Excessive moisture · say it: ek-SES-iv MOYS-cherAlso written: protect from moisture, store in a dry place, keep dry

Short answer

On a medicine label, 'protect from excessive moisture' is a storage instruction: keep the product dry so it does not break down or lose strength.

What it means

Excessive moisture means too much dampness or humidity. On medicine labels it usually appears in the storage section, for example 'store at room temperature and protect from excessive moisture'. Many tablets, capsules and powders can absorb water from the air, which may make them crumble, stick together, change colour, or slowly lose strength.

The instruction is there to keep the medicine working as it should until its expiry date. This is why some bottles contain a small drying sachet (a desiccant) and why bathrooms, which are often warm and steamy, are not a good place to store medicines. Some medicines come in foil blister packs for the same reason and should be kept in the pack until used.

The phrase can also appear on skin products, such as some antifungal powders, which are designed for areas that stay moist, like skin folds. Read the whole sentence to see whether it is about storing the product or about where it is used.

Where you may see it

📄 How it looks on a report

Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F). Protect from excessive moisture. Keep container tightly closed.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • It does not mean the medicine becomes dangerous the moment it gets slightly damp, but it may work less well.
  • It does not mean you should put it in the fridge unless the label says so.
  • The drying sachet in the bottle is not a medicine and should not be swallowed; keep it in the bottle.
