What Is a Caplet? How It Differs From Tablets and Capsules

Caplet · say it: KAP-litAlso written: capsule-shaped tablet, coated caplet, film-coated caplet

Short answer

A caplet is a tablet shaped like a capsule: smooth, oblong and often coated, so it is easier to swallow. It is still a solid tablet.

What it means

A caplet is a solid tablet pressed into an oblong, capsule-like shape, often with a smooth coating. The name combines 'capsule' and 'tablet'. The shape and coating make it easier to swallow than a round tablet. Caplets are common for over-the-counter pain relievers and some prescription medicines.

Labels mention 'caplets' so you know which form is in the pack, because the same medicine may come as tablets, caplets, capsules, gelcaps or liquids, sometimes with different strengths per piece. Always check the strength and the dose on that specific pack. Labels may also say whether a caplet can be split or crushed; coated or extended-release caplets often should not be.

A capsule is different: it has a shell, often in two parts, containing powder or liquid. A gelcap is a tablet or capsule with a gelatin-like coating.

Where you may see it

📄 How it looks on a report

Adults and children 12 years and over: take 2 caplets every 6 hours while symptoms last. Do not take more than the label limit in 24 hours.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • A caplet is not a capsule.
  • It does not mean every caplet can be split or crushed.
  • The same brand's caplets and tablets may not be the same strength.
