What Is a GLP-1 Receptor Agonist? Its Warnings Explained

GLP-1 receptor agonist · say it: jee-el-pee-WUN ree-SEP-ter AG-uh-nistAlso written: GLP-1 agonist, GLP-1 RA, GLP-1 medicine, incretin mimetic

Short answer

A GLP-1 receptor agonist is a medicine that copies a gut hormone to help control blood sugar, slow stomach emptying and reduce appetite.

What it means

GLP-1 is a hormone released by the gut after eating. It helps the body release insulin when blood sugar is high, slows how fast the stomach empties, and makes you feel full. GLP-1 receptor agonists copy this hormone. Examples include semaglutide, liraglutide and dulaglutide. They are used for type 2 diabetes and, for some products, weight management or reducing heart risk. Most are weekly or daily injections; one is a tablet.

Their labels carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumours, based on studies in rodents, and say not to use them if you or your family have had medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Labels also warn about pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas, dehydration from vomiting, and slowed stomach emptying before surgery or procedures.

They are different from insulin, although both are injected. Nausea is a common side effect, especially when starting or increasing the dose.

Where you may see it

  • Boxed warnings on semaglutide, liraglutide and dulaglutide labels
  • Medication guides with injection pens
  • Diabetes and weight clinic letters

📄 How it looks on a report

Contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • The thyroid tumour warning comes from animal studies; it does not mean the medicine will cause cancer in you.
  • It is not insulin.
  • Nausea at the start does not always mean you must stop; ask about it.
