What Is Pancreatitis? Why Some Medicine Labels Warn
Pancreatitis · say it: pan-kree-uh-TY-tisAlso written: acute pancreatitis, inflamed pancreas, chronic pancreatitis
Short answer
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis causes severe belly pain and needs urgent medical care.
What it means
Pancreatitis means the pancreas, an organ behind the stomach that makes digestive juices and insulin, is inflamed. Acute pancreatitis usually causes sudden, severe pain in the upper belly that may spread to the back, often with nausea and vomiting. It needs urgent medical help. Common causes include gallstones and alcohol, but some medicines can also cause it.
Labels for some medicines, including GLP-1 receptor agonists, some anti-seizure medicines and some others, list pancreatitis as a rare but serious side effect. The warning is telling you to stop and seek medical help if you get severe, ongoing belly pain, with or without vomiting, and to tell your doctor if you have had pancreatitis before.
Acute pancreatitis comes on suddenly; chronic pancreatitis is long-lasting inflammation that can lead to ongoing pain and digestion problems. Pancreatitis is different from pancreatic cancer.
