What Are Herpesviruses? Why Medicine Labels Mention Them
Herpesviruses · say it: HER-peez-VY-ruh-sizAlso written: herpes viruses, herpes simplex virus, HSV, varicella-zoster virus, herpes family
Short answer
Herpesviruses are a family of viruses that stay in the body for life after infection, including those that cause cold sores, genital herpes and chickenpox.
What it means
Herpesviruses are a family of viruses. After the first infection they stay in the body in a resting (latent) state and can become active again later. Members include herpes simplex 1 and 2 (cold sores and genital herpes), varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox, and shingles later in life), Epstein-Barr virus (glandular fever, mononucleosis) and cytomegalovirus (CMV).
You see the word on labels of antivirals such as acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir, which work against some herpesviruses, and on labels of immune-suppressing medicines, which warn that herpes infections such as shingles may reactivate. People with weakened immune systems can get more severe herpes infections and should report rashes, blisters or fever promptly.
'Herpes' on its own usually means herpes simplex, but the family is much bigger. Shingles is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, not the same virus as cold sores.
Where you may see it
- 'Indications' sections of acyclovir and valacyclovir labels
- Immune-suppressing medicine labels ('herpes zoster reactivation')
- Blood or swab test reports (HSV, VZV, CMV, EBV)
📄 How it looks on a report
Herpes zoster (shingles) reactivation has been reported in patients receiving this medicine.
🙅 What it does not mean
- Having a herpesvirus does not always mean you will have symptoms.
- Cold sore herpes and shingles are not the same virus.
- Antivirals do not remove herpesviruses from the body; they control active infection.
