What Does Immunocompromised Mean on a Medicine Label?

Immunocompromised · say it: IM-yoo-noh-KOM-pruh-myzdAlso written: immunosuppressed, weakened immune system, immunodeficient

Short answer

Immunocompromised describes a person whose immune system is weaker than usual, from illness or medicines, so they get infections more easily.

What it means

A person is immunocompromised when their immune system cannot fight infection as well as usual. Causes include medicines (such as chemotherapy, transplant medicines, long-term corticosteroids and biologics), conditions such as untreated HIV, some cancers, and some inherited immune disorders. Infections can be more frequent, more severe, or caused by germs that rarely affect others. A fever in someone who is immunocompromised should be reported promptly.

Labels use the word to describe who may need different care. Live vaccines, such as some shingles, MMR and yellow fever vaccines, are usually not recommended. Some medicines need longer courses or different choices for infections, and some labels warn that a medicine may be less effective or riskier in this group. Antiviral labels may list 'immunocompetent' (normal immune system) to mean the opposite group.

Immunocompromised describes the person; immunosuppression describes the state or what a medicine does.
