What Is Hydatid Disease? A Tapeworm Cyst Explained
Hydatid Disease · say it: hy-DAT-id dih-ZEEZAlso written: echinococcosis, hydatidosis, hydatid cyst, cystic echinococcosis
Short answer
Hydatid disease is an infection with a tiny tapeworm (Echinococcus) that can form slow-growing fluid-filled cysts, most often in the liver or lungs.
What it means
Hydatid disease, also called echinococcosis, is caused by the larval stage of a small tapeworm called Echinococcus. People usually pick it up by swallowing eggs passed in the droppings of infected dogs or similar animals, often where dogs and livestock such as sheep live closely together. The larvae can settle in organs and slowly grow into cysts, most often in the liver and lungs.
The term appears on the labels of some anti-worm medicines (anthelmintics) because they are approved to help treat it, usually alongside surgery or other procedures decided by a specialist. Labels for these medicines also explain blood and liver monitoring, because treatment can last for weeks or months.
A hydatid cyst is different from an ordinary simple cyst seen on a scan. Most cysts found on scans are not caused by parasites; a doctor uses the scan pattern, travel and animal-contact history, and sometimes blood tests to tell them apart.
Where you may see it
- The 'Indications' section of anthelmintic medicine labels
- Ultrasound or CT reports describing a cyst in the liver or lung
- Travel-medicine and infectious-disease clinic letters
📄 How it looks on a report
Indicated for the treatment of cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum, caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm.
🙅 What it does not mean
- Seeing 'cyst' on a scan report does not mean it is a hydatid cyst; most cysts are not caused by parasites.
- It is not caught by simply being near another person who has it; it comes from swallowing tapeworm eggs from animal droppings.
- A medicine label listing hydatid disease does not mean the medicine is the whole treatment; surgery or drainage is often part of care.
