Scans and X-rays

What Does Cyst Mean on a Scan Report?

Cyst · say it: SISTAlso written: fluid-filled sac, simple cyst, complex cyst

Short answer

A cyst is a closed sac with a thin wall that usually holds fluid, and simple cysts seen on scans are very common and usually harmless.

What it means

A cyst is a small pocket or sac with its own wall, usually filled with fluid. Cysts can form in many parts of the body, such as the kidneys, liver, ovaries, breasts and thyroid. Many cause no symptoms and are found by chance during a scan for something else.

When a radiologist writes "cyst", they are telling your doctor that the spot looks like fluid inside a wall rather than solid tissue. They often add "simple" or "complex". A simple cyst has a thin, smooth wall and clear fluid, and is usually harmless. A complex cyst has features such as a thicker wall, inner dividing walls or solid areas, and may need a closer look or a follow-up scan.

A cyst is different from a mass or a solid nodule, which is made of tissue rather than fluid. "Lesion" is a broader word that can cover cysts, solid spots and many other findings.

Where you may see it

  • Ultrasound reports of the kidney, liver, ovary, breast or thyroid
  • The 'Findings' section of abdominal CT and MRI reports
  • Gynaecology and urology clinic letters
  • Breast imaging reports, sometimes alongside a BI-RADS category

📄 How it looks on a report

Right kidney: 2 cm simple cortical cyst. No solid component. No further imaging required.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • It does not mean cancer. Simple cysts are typically benign, and the word itself describes a fluid-filled sac rather than a type of disease.
  • It does not always need treatment or removal. Many cysts are simply noted on the report and left alone, especially if they cause no symptoms.
  • "Complex" does not mean dangerous. It means the cyst has features that the radiologist wants your doctor to look at more closely, sometimes with another scan.
