Scans and X-rays
What Does Enhancement Mean on a CT or MRI Report?
Enhancement · say it: en-HANSS-mentAlso written: enhancing lesion, contrast enhancement, enhances
Short answer
Enhancement means an area becomes brighter on a scan after contrast dye is given, which shows it has a blood supply.
What it means
Some CT and MRI scans are done with contrast dye given into a vein. The dye travels with the blood, so tissues with a good blood supply look brighter on the pictures taken after the dye goes in.
When a report says an area "enhances", the radiologist is telling your doctor that it got brighter after the dye. "Non-enhancing" means it did not change. Radiologists also describe the pattern, such as rim, uniform or patchy enhancement, because the pattern helps them tell different kinds of spots apart.
Enhancement is not the same as "hyperdense" or "bright" on its own. Those words describe how an area looks on any picture, while enhancement only means a change caused by the dye.

📄 How it looks on a report
The lesion shows no enhancement after contrast.
🙅 What it does not mean
- Enhancement does not mean cancer. Healthy organs, inflammation, healing tissue and many benign growths enhance too.
- Non-enhancing does not always mean harmless. It is one feature the radiologist weighs together with size, shape and how the area looks on other pictures.
- It does not mean the dye caused a problem or a reaction. The word only describes how the tissue looked after the dye.
