Scans and X-rays
What Does Follow-Up Imaging Mean on a Scan Report?
Follow-up imaging · say it: FOL-oh-up IM-ih-jingAlso written: interval follow-up, repeat imaging, surveillance imaging
Short answer
Follow-up imaging means having another scan later to see whether something has changed over time.
What it means
Sometimes one scan cannot show whether a finding matters. Looking at it again after some time lets doctors check whether it stays the same, shrinks or grows.
When a report recommends follow-up imaging, the radiologist is telling your doctor which type of scan to do next and roughly when, for example "follow-up ultrasound in 6 months". These suggestions often come from published guidelines for common findings such as small lung nodules or thyroid nodules.
Follow-up imaging is different from a follow-up appointment, which is a visit with a doctor. It is also different from more urgent next steps, such as a biopsy, which a report would usually spell out separately.
Where you may see it
- The 'Impression' or 'Recommendations' section of CT, MRI and ultrasound reports
- Letters from specialists to your family doctor
- Discharge summaries after a hospital stay
- Patient portal messages reminding you a repeat scan is due
📄 How it looks on a report
Recommend follow-up CT chest in 12 months.
🙅 What it does not mean
- It does not mean the radiologist thinks something is wrong. A repeat scan is often a precaution, and a finding that stays the same over time is usually reassuring.
- It does not get booked automatically everywhere. In many places someone has to order it, so it is worth asking who will arrange it.
- It does not mean you should wait until the scan if new symptoms appear. Contact your doctor if things change before then.
