What Is Maintenance Therapy? Long-Term Treatment Explained

Maintenance Therapy · say it: MAYN-tuh-nuns THAIR-uh-peeAlso written: maintenance treatment, maintenance dose, long-term treatment

Short answer

Maintenance therapy is ongoing treatment taken to keep a condition under control or stop it coming back, rather than to treat a sudden flare.

What it means

Maintenance therapy means treatment that continues over a long period to keep a condition stable after it has been brought under control. Examples include daily preventer inhalers for asthma, ongoing medicine to prevent relapse in depression or bipolar disorder, and continued treatment after the first phase of some cancer or addiction care.

Labels use the phrase to say what a medicine is for and what it is not for. For example, an inhaler label may say it is for maintenance treatment and not for relieving sudden symptoms, so you also need a quick-acting reliever. It may also explain that the maintenance dose is different from the starting dose.

Maintenance therapy is different from acute treatment (for a sudden problem) and from 'as needed' (PRN) use. Feeling well on maintenance therapy often means it is working, not that it is no longer needed.

Where you may see it

  • Inhaler labels under 'Indications and usage'
  • Psychiatry and oncology treatment plans
  • Prescription labels and discharge summaries

📄 How it looks on a report

Indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma. Not indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • Feeling well does not mean maintenance therapy can be stopped; ask first.
  • A maintenance medicine is not usually a rescue medicine for sudden symptoms.
  • Long-term use does not by itself mean addiction or that something is wrong.
