What Does Cardiovascular Mortality Mean on a Label?

Cardiovascular mortality · say it: kar-dee-oh-VAS-kyoo-ler mor-TAL-ih-teeAlso written: cardiovascular death, CV mortality, CV death, death from heart disease

Short answer

Cardiovascular mortality means deaths caused by heart and blood vessel disease, such as heart attacks, heart failure and strokes.

What it means

Mortality means death, and cardiovascular refers to the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular mortality is the number or rate of deaths from conditions such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke and sudden abnormal heart rhythms. It is a key measure in medical research because it shows whether a treatment helps people live longer.

You see it on medicine labels in two ways. Some labels report clinical trial results, for example a diabetes or heart medicine that 'reduced the risk of cardiovascular death'. Others carry warnings where a study found a higher rate of cardiovascular deaths, such as some NSAIDs or medicines used outside their approved groups. These figures come from large groups of people over time and do not predict what will happen to one person.

Cardiovascular mortality is different from cardiovascular events (or MACE), which include non-fatal heart attacks and strokes. All-cause mortality counts deaths from any cause.

Where you may see it

  • The 'Clinical Studies' and 'Indications' sections of heart and diabetes medicine labels
  • Boxed warnings on NSAID labels about cardiovascular risk
  • Medical research summaries and patient information

📄 How it looks on a report

Indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • Seeing 'mortality' on a label does not mean the medicine is likely to cause your death; it reports trial findings for large groups.
  • A medicine reducing cardiovascular death does not mean it prevents all heart problems.
  • These measures are about groups, not a prediction for any one person.
