What Does Differential Diagnosis Mean on a Report?
Differential diagnosis · say it: dif-er-EN-shul dy-ug-NOH-sisAlso written: differential, DDx, differentials include
Short answer
A differential diagnosis is a list of possible conditions that could explain a finding or symptoms, before the cause is confirmed.
What it means
When a scan, test or set of symptoms could have more than one explanation, doctors write down the possibilities. This list is the differential diagnosis. It is a working list, not a final answer.
On a report or clinic letter, the list tells the next doctor what the writer was thinking about and why more tests may follow. It is often ordered from most to least likely, and it helps decide which test will narrow things down fastest.
A differential is different from a diagnosis, which is the cause doctors have settled on. It is also different from the impression on a scan report, which is the radiologist's summary and may contain a differential inside it.
Where you may see it
- The 'Impression' or 'Conclusion' section of CT, MRI and ultrasound reports ("Differential includes ...")
- Clinic letters from specialists to your family doctor
- Hospital admission notes and discharge summaries
- Pathology reports when the tissue sample could fit more than one condition
📄 How it looks on a report
Differential diagnosis includes haemangioma or focal nodular hyperplasia.
🙅 What it does not mean
- It is not a diagnosis. Your report is listing possibilities that are still being sorted out, and only one of them, or sometimes none, will turn out to be the cause.
- Seeing a serious condition on the list does not mean it is likely. Doctors often include less likely but important possibilities on purpose, so that they are checked and not missed.
- A long list does not mean your doctors are confused. Writing out every reasonable explanation is a normal, careful habit in medicine.
