What Does Postmenopausal Mean on a Medicine Label?

Postmenopausal · say it: post-MEN-oh-paw-zulAlso written: post-menopausal, after menopause

Short answer

Postmenopausal describes a woman who has gone through menopause, usually meaning 12 months in a row without a menstrual period.

What it means

Menopause is the point when periods stop for good because the ovaries make much less estrogen. A woman is usually called postmenopausal once she has gone 12 months in a row without a period that is not explained by something else. It can also happen earlier after surgery to remove the ovaries or certain treatments.

Medicine labels use 'postmenopausal' to describe who a medicine is for or who was studied. For example, some osteoporosis and breast cancer medicines are approved for postmenopausal women, and hormone therapy labels carry warnings for this group. Leaflets may also say that any bleeding after menopause should be checked by a doctor.

Perimenopause is the years leading up to menopause, when periods become irregular. Premenopausal means before menopause has begun.
