What Does Within Normal Limits (WNL) Mean?

Within Normal Limits · say it: with-IN NOR-mul LIM-itsAlso written: WNL, within normal range, no abnormality detected

Short answer

Within normal limits (WNL) means a result or exam finding falls inside the range expected for most healthy people.

What it means

WNL is a common shorthand on lab reports, exam notes and test summaries. It means the measured value, or what the clinician saw or heard, is within the usual expected band.

Writers use it to save space when a result needs no further comment. For lab tests, the limits are the reference range printed by that lab. For a physical exam, ECG or scan, it means nothing outside the ordinary was noted for that part of the check.

It is reassuring about that specific test or exam, but it only covers what was checked at that time. It is close in meaning to "unremarkable", which is used more often on scan reports.

Where you may see it

  • Summary lines on blood test results, where one phrase stands in for a whole panel such as a full blood count
  • The examination section of GP and clinic notes, for example "Chest: WNL"
  • ECG, hearing and eye test reports, often in the conclusion line
  • Pre-employment, sports or insurance medical forms with a tick box for each check

📄 How it looks on a report

CBC: within normal limits.

🙅 What it does not mean

  • It does not mean every possible condition has been ruled out. It only covers the tests or checks that were actually done.
  • It is not a promise that results will stay the same in future; many values change over time, so a later test can give a different answer.
  • It does not mean your symptoms are imagined. If you still feel unwell, it is reasonable to say so and talk about what else might be going on.
