What Does Idiopathic Mean on a Medical Report?

Idiopathic · say it: id-ee-oh-PATH-ikAlso written: of unknown cause, primary (in some contexts), essential (in some contexts)

Short answer

Idiopathic means the cause of a condition is not known. It describes the cause, not how serious the condition is.

What it means

Idiopathic is used when a condition is present but no specific cause has been found, even after looking for one.

Many conditions have idiopathic forms, for example some kinds of high blood pressure, scoliosis, epilepsy and lung conditions. Other words with a similar meaning include "essential" and "primary" in some contexts.

A condition being idiopathic does not mean it cannot be managed. Treatment is often aimed at the symptoms or the condition itself.
