What Does Overt Mean on a Medical Report or Label?
Overt · say it: oh-VURTAlso written: clinically overt, obvious, manifest
Short answer
Overt means clearly visible or obvious, with signs or symptoms present, as opposed to hidden or found only by a test.
What it means
Overt means open, obvious or clearly showing. In medicine it describes a condition that has clear signs or symptoms, or that is obvious on examination or standard tests. For example, 'overt bleeding' is bleeding you can see, and 'overt hypothyroidism' means thyroid blood tests are clearly abnormal rather than just borderline.
Labels and reports use 'overt' to separate clear-cut cases from hidden or mild ones. A label might warn about 'overt bleeding' as a sign to report, or say a medicine was studied in people with 'overt' disease. The opposite word is 'occult' (hidden, such as blood in stool found only by a test) or 'subclinical' (found only by testing, without symptoms).
Overt does not by itself mean severe. It means the condition is clear and present, which may be mild or serious.
Where you may see it
- Medicine labels describing bleeding or disease severity
- Thyroid and liver clinic letters
- Lab reports and test interpretation notes
📄 How it looks on a report
Monitor patients for signs of overt bleeding, such as blood in the urine or stool.
🙅 What it does not mean
- Overt does not mean severe; it means obvious or present.
- Not overt does not mean nothing is there; something can be hidden (occult) or subclinical.
- An overt finding still needs a doctor to explain what it means for you.
